Graduation is the kind of occasion people genuinely look back on, and the photographs from it tend to be kept for decades. The ceremony itself is busy and brief, and the outdoor photographs taken outside a crowded campus building are rarely what anyone would choose as their lasting memory of the day. A proper portrait session, at a pace that suits the significance of the occasion, produces something quite different.
Studio Graduation Portraits
Academic regalia, a gown and hood worn once in a lifetime, photographs well under controlled studio lighting in a way that a quick snapshot outside a ceremony building simply cannot match. The studio gives us full control over the light, the background, and the pace of the session, which means we’re not competing with crowds, weather, or the time pressure of a ceremony schedule.
The result is a formal portrait of the kind that gets framed rather than filed: something the graduate’s family will have on a wall long after the day itself has blurred in memory.
Family Groups on Graduation Day
Graduation brings extended families together in a way that few other occasions do. Parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, all gathered in one place and dressed for it. A family portrait session around graduation makes the most of that, and is something we arrange regularly for families who want something more considered than a rushed group shot on a busy campus.
A single session can cover the graduate alone, the graduate with parents, and the wider family group. When you call to book, tell us who you’re expecting to bring, and we’ll make sure there’s enough time to cover everyone properly.
On Location
For graduates who want the campus itself as part of the photograph, we can arrange location sessions around the University of Galway or ATU Galway grounds. The architecture and landscaping of both campuses work well as a backdrop, and a location session can be combined with studio portraits on the same day if you’d like both.
Location sessions work best in the morning, before the day’s schedule takes over. If you’re planning a campus session, call us well in advance so we can discuss timing, since graduation days move quickly and the window for a relaxed outdoor session is often shorter than people expect.
Before the Session
Academic gowns vary by institution and degree, and the hood colours reflect the specific discipline. Bring the full regalia, including the mortarboard. Most institutions arrange gown hire close to the ceremony itself, and if you’re unsure exactly what you’ll be wearing on the day, a quick call to us beforehand will confirm what to bring.
What you wear under the gown matters more than most graduates expect. A plain, well-fitting shirt or top in a neutral colour works well under most gowns. Very bright colours and bold patterns can be distracting in the final image, particularly where the gown is open or partially off.
If you’re planning the session close to graduation day, booking before the ceremony rather than after it usually produces better results. Everyone is still fresh, the regalia is unworn, and there’s no end-of-day tiredness in the photographs.
Booking a Graduation Session
Graduation sessions around the main University of Galway and ATU Galway ceremonies in autumn fill up well ahead of time. Leaving it to the week of the ceremony means working around limited availability, and in some years, we’re fully booked before the ceremony dates are announced. If graduation is on the horizon, the earlier you call, the better.
Sessions are booked by phone. Call us on 087 099 3990, and we’ll talk through what you’re looking for, who’ll be coming along, and find a date that works around the ceremony. There are no online booking forms, just a straightforward conversation about what you need from the day.
You’re also welcome to get in touch here if you’d prefer to start with a message.
